Glo Eco Briquettes – fuel for your stove that warms you and not your planet!

As you drive around the countryside right now and during the next few weeks you cannot help but notice the brilliant carpets of yellow flowers that distinguish the landscape. What you may not know is that an entrepreneurial farming family from Yorkshire is turning this crop into an eco-friendly briquette to burn on your multifuel stove!

Wharfe Valley rape is grown on the farm in Collingham for the production of cold pressed extra virgin rapeseed oil. Try some- you’ll love it! Find out more here

After the oil has been pressed out there is a residue of seed husks called rapemeal. Determined to maximise the use of the rapemeal in a profitable and sustainable way the family produced a business plan based on extensive market research. This resulted in obtaining some grant funding to help them make Eco briquettes on the farm for use in multifuel stoves and chimeneas . The result is an energy filled Glo Eco briquette that is a super efficient environmentally friendly fuel.

The beauty of ‘Glo’ Eco Briquettes is that they are carbon neutral. The CO2 released in burning them has only been absorbed by growing the rape crop within the past 9-12 months. CO2 from coal was captured millions of years ago, and CO2 from hardwood logs up to 100 years ago. When these materials burn they release the CO2 back into the environment.

In addition, the briquettes are made entirely from the farm’s own waste rapemeal so there are no transport miles to add to this product!

For the consumer too the huge benefit is that the ‘Glo’ Eco briquettes have an energy value of 22-24MJ/kg, twice the energy of logs at 7-11 MJ/kg and nearly as good as coal at around 28 MJ/kg. They burn twice as hot and last up to three times longer.

All in all a rather powerful argument for trying them out on your stove!
